Power changed? Keep your frame, change the lenses
A new prescription doesn’t mean new glasses. How often power changes, the signs your lenses are out of date, and how to update them in the frame you love.

Your eye test shows a new number, and the optician suggests a whole new pair. But if you like your frame, you don’t have to replace it. A change in power only needs new lenses — the frame can stay.
How often does eye power change?
It varies by age and eyes:
- Children and teenagers — short-sight (minus power) often increases as they grow, so yearly checks are common.
- Adults 20–40 — power is usually stable, changing slowly if at all.
- After 40 — near vision naturally weakens (presbyopia), so many people start needing reading power or progressives.
Most eye-care professionals suggest an eye test every one to two years, or sooner if you notice a change.
Signs your lenses are out of date
- Squinting to read signboards or number plates
- Holding your phone further away to read it
- Headaches or tired eyes by evening
- Seeing better with your glasses off for close work
- Night driving feels harder than it used to
Why keep the frame?
A frame you’ve worn for years already fits your face — the nose pads sit right, the arms rest comfortably, and you’re used to how you look in it. Replacing only the lenses keeps that fit, and usually costs much less than a new branded pair.
Is it a good time to upgrade your lens?
If your power has changed, it’s worth thinking about how you use your eyes now:
- Long screen days? Blue-cut with anti-glare helps comfort — it’s standard on our single vision lenses.
- In and out of the sun? Photochromic lenses darken outdoors and clear indoors.
- Needing reading glasses now? A progressive lens gives near, middle and far vision in one pair. Read single vision vs progressive to decide.
How to update your lenses without visiting a store
- Get your new prescription (a photo of it is enough).
- Book lens replacement and choose your lenses.
- We pick up your glasses, fit new lenses to your new power and deliver them back — usually in 3–6 days.
Keep your old prescription too. If you ever have a problem adjusting, it helps the optician compare the old and new numbers.
The bottom line
New power, same frame is the most common reason people replace lenses. As long as the frame is in good condition, changing just the lenses saves money and keeps the fit you already love.
